A Letter from the President
As the 2007-08 academic year comes to an end, I am pleased to say that the Broncos have had another impressive year across the board. The Broncos' baseball team concluded their best season in the past five years, along with freshman pitcher, Thain Simon `11, being named WCC Freshman of the Year. The Broncos also boasted four All-Americans this year, two WCC Players of the Year and several all-league awards across a variety of intercollegiate athletic programs. In the classroom, Santa Clara's student-athletes continued to maintain their average cumulative GPA of over a 3.0, and in the community, there has been no shortage of student-athlete involvement in a variety of outreach programs. Their accolades are also a testament to our coaches who have been so successful in recruiting, mentoring and retaining them at Santa Clara. As we approach the end of our fiscal year (June 30), the Bronco Bench Foundation has been extremely busy in our efforts to raise money for Santa Clara's student-athletes. In April, the LA President's Club Golf Tournament, with the help of Master of Ceremonies and 2008 head Super Bowl referee, Mike Carey `71, reached new heights, raising nearly $40,000 for athletic scholarships. In May, the Bronco Bench organized its Second All-Sports BBQ in conjunction with Student-Athlete Day at Schott Stadium as they paid tribute to the memory of Pat Malley `53 on the 23rd anniversary of his passing. In June, we will make our year-end push for BBF contributions to ensure that we meet our goals; if you haven't made your gift for this year, please call today! The Bronco Bench Foundation strives to promote a sense of community among Santa Clara alumni, parents and friends. To this end, we will be unveiling a new series of member benefits beginning July 1. In conjunction with last year's website upgrades, we hope that these additions will make supporting Santa Clara's student-athletes and the Bronco Bench Foundation that much easier and more enjoyable. Stay tuned for more information regarding the updates to BBF's membership levels and benefits, on the BBF website at www.broncobench.com Next year, the fun begins on Monday, Sept. 8, when the Heritage Bank of Commerce will be presenting the 30th Annual BBF Golf Classic at Cinnabar Hills Golf Club. Brent Jones `85, will once again be our Master of Ceremonies as we honor legendary Bronco and 49er football coach, Bill McPherson `54. I hope you'll be there too! On behalf of the BBF Board of Trustees, I would like to thank you for generously supporting student-athlete scholarships at Santa Clara University. May your summer be restful, your travels be safe and the Broncos always be in your heart.
Go Broncos,
